Italy is by far the most enjoyable place to study the Bible. There is no indication that Jesus ever stepped foot there. There is only scant reference in Acts to Paul’s having traveled there. Still, there is no more important place to study the backgrounds of the New Testament. And, it is a lot of fun, too.
But it is not only for fun that we travel Italy. The Roman Empire is the backdrop for the Gospel drama. The Gospel writers, the Apostle Paul, John, the author of the Book of Revelation, and all other authors of the New Testament presume that their readers are intimately acquainted with the power of the Roman Empire even if they only allude to or hint at it. Their original readers were well acquainted with it. Today’s readers? Not so much.
Our approach to Christian travel in Italy is unique. All tourists to Rome, for example, visit the Coliseum, the Vatican and the catacombs. Yet, Italy holds forth so much more of interest for the student of the Bible. When you travel with us to Italy, you will visit all the most well-known sites, but we will also take you off the beaten track in Rome and Campania. Nowhere else in the Mediterranean can you explore such well-preserved archaeological remains. Biblical texts are illuminated by an understanding of widespread cultural forms that are spectacularly preserved in Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabia, Oplontis and Paestum. Our faculty will also introduce you to the Renaissance and all periods of art history. If you would like, we will explore Medieval spirituality and St. Francis. And no tourist can escape seeing the art of the Old Masters in Italy. Most tourists look at art; our faculty will open up a new appreciation and love for it. You will understand what you are looking at.
Not least in any visit to Italy is the exquisite cuisine and wine, and the romantic seascapes especially along the Amalfi Coast. There is no end to the people watching and shopping for fashion items, if you would like. Everyone enjoys the gellatti, the pasta, the wine and olive oil. These are the delicious parts of the most enjoyable place to study the Bible.
